What can physio do to help when pregnant?

Did you know 70% of all pregnant women experience back pain at some point during their pregnancy. This is one of the most common reasons why pregnant women attend physio during this time. Often caused by a combination of reduced core strength, extra weight pressures on the hips and spine, reduced lower limb strength and the increased lumbar lordosis.

However many women don’t realise physiotherapy can also assist with:

  • short and long term pain relief strategies for other conditions

  • assist in keeping you moving safely with tailored exercise programs & stretching program

  • Provide massage

  • taping

  • joint mobilisation
    and

  • prescription of braces/support leggings.

Some of the other services/conditions we treat during pregnancy include:

  • treating pelvic and ligament pains (due to relaxin)

  • treating sore shoulders (often due to increased breast size)

  • strengthening of the pelvic floor

  • advice on labour positions and breathing

  • preparation for recovery post partum

  • education on how to adapt exercise

Each of these services/conditions will become more relevant in different trimesters.

Our hope is to make your pregnancy as enjoyable, pain free and calm as possible. Helping you continue to move, reduce the risks of abdominal separation and incontinence as well as giving you strategies in labour is what we are trained for.
