Compartment Syndrome
Introduction
Compartment syndrome occurs when excessive pressure builds up inside the muscles of the lower leg, restricting blood flow and nerve function. It can be acute (medical emergency) or chronic (common in athletes).
Signs/Symptoms
Tightness, cramping, numbness, tingling, and pain that worsens with exercise and eases with rest. In acute cases, severe pain and swelling require urgent medical attention.
Causes
Excessive exercise, muscle swelling, or trauma leading to restricted space within the muscle compartments.
How Physio Can Help
For chronic cases, physiotherapy improves biomechanics, gait, and flexibility, and provides a graded exercise program. Referral to a specialist may be required in persistent or acute cases.
