Calf Strain / Tear
Introduction
A calf strain or tear occurs when the muscle fibres in the lower leg are overstretched or torn. This is a common injury in running, jumping, and sudden change-of-direction sports. Severity can range from mild strains to complete muscle tears.
Signs/Symptoms
Sudden sharp pain in the back of the lower leg, swelling, bruising, and difficulty walking or pushing off. Severe tears may feel like a “pop” at the time of injury.
Causes
Explosive movements, fatigue, poor warm-up, or inadequate flexibility.
